This amazing membership directory of the Richard Wagner Lodge dates to the late 1800's, and includes decades of historical portraits, each signed by the member in the photo. The Lodge was a branch of the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization similar to the Odd Fellows. The 'F C B' in the crest stand for Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence, the distinguishing principles of the order. The 18 thick double sided pages hold 4 portraits a side, for a total of 144 mounted pictures. There are also 10 loose pictures that came with the book that are unmounted. Writing on the back of one of the extra photos date the book as far back as 1891, although those mounted inside come from a range of eras.
Measures 20 1/2" tall by 13 1/2" wide by 3 1/2" thick, with 18 thick pages. Weighs 18 pounds. Decent vintage condition considering the age of the book. The leather is crumbly on the cover, and there is a slash near the front crest where leather has deteriorated. The inside pages are in good condition, and turn easily if done with care. Pages are hinged to allow the book to lie flat while viewing. Additional leather loss at the hinge of the spine.
The Order of the Knights of Pythias was formed in 1864, and was the first fraternal order to be chartered by an act of Congress. They are dedicated to the cause of universal peace, by promoting friendship among men and relieving suffering. References to the Richard Wagner Lodge 42 in Milwaukee were found in the 1888 Wright's Directory (like a precursor to the Yellow Pages) that placed the lodge on northeast corner of Grand Avenue and West Water Street.
