I must be honest - this is the first inkwell I've found, and I simply love the details! The clear glass well reminds me of a glass bird cage feeder. It's permanently mounted in the heavy base, so I assume the ink was filled through the second hole in the base, and you dipped your pen in there. I believe the delightfully fancy curved brass pieces are to hold your pen - they are beautifully detailed and pick up the gold accent bands painted around the black base. Great gift for a writer or for someone who needs a very fancy paperweight!
The base measures 5” in diameter by 4” tall. Heavily weighted on the bottom, so this is very solid - it weighs nearly a pound and a half. Good, used vintage condition with well earned patina. There was once some additional glass where you dip the pen into the ink - this has broken off and only the rough edge remains - see last photo. The two brass pen holders swivel a bit - I'm not sure if they are designed this way or if they just loosened over the years.
