What a great piece of the old west to add some interest to your decor! This beautiful leather saddle pad is lined with a wooly white fleece, and stamped with the name of the maker, 'George Kieffer, Sattlemacher, Muenchen (Munich), Made in Germany'. The pad was used in thoroughbred racing, and the pockets were filled with lead weights for 'handicapped' races - to make the weight the horse was carrying equal what was assigned by impost. (Thanks to Kelsey for the information!) Sling the pad over a banister, or use it in the mudroom to add an authentic equestrian touch. Imagine this strung with some brass bells and greenery for the holidays - perfect!
The top center seam (which would lie along the backbone of the horse) measures 21" from front to back. From the center seam to the bottom of each side measures about 20" inches. The leather portions on each side measure about 18" wide by 11" tall. The leather is in nice condition with markings and some stains consistent with age and use. The wooly lining has some holes and tears, but is still intact overall.
