We have quite a find for you today. An antique traveling dental cabinet with (21) original dentist tools included. Manufactured by Lee S. Smith & Son Co. sometime in the early 1900's this traveling wood and leather machinist chest has survived for over a hundred years. And not just that, it has managed to remain in fantastic condition.
Starting with the exterior, the leather remains soft and pliant and the (3) latches and handle on top all are present and function perfectly. Once unlatched the front lays forward and the top can be opened nearly 180ᵒ and is held by two sliding brackets. Once opened, a light but distinct smell of vintage dental solutions can be noticed and then the top tray can be lifted and pushed back; which in turn, lifts the tray below it and allows access to all three of the trays in the upper section.
The uppermost tray is nearly completely full of a wide variety of antique dental tools from the turn of the century. There are picks and scrapers and even one of those little mirrors. All three trays have retained their thick label cards that rest in the front of each tray indicating what tools go where. Also the purplish velvet like material remains in good condition throughout the cabinet.
The remaining (6) drawers in the lower section slide in and out with ease and still retain their darkened oak finish. Hardware on the cabinet is comprised of solid brass knobs that has developed a darkened patina over time.
A true conversation piece as well as an authentic 100+ year old antique. A great find to be sure.
