Mid century modern glass divided casserole / serving dish by JAJ Pyrex Glass in the Snowflake pattern (white / charcoal black). A slice of 1950's kitchen style for your home!
ABOUT THE CASSEROLE / DIVIDED DISH
Shallow divided casserole dish made of heat resistant Pyrex glass with handles - the interior finish is white glass, the exterior matte black with snowflake pattern in white.
The Snowflake pattern dates from 1956, the first printed pattern to be introduced by Pyrex - prior to this, their kitchen ware was produced in solid colours only. Snowflake was produced in charcoal black, turquoise, pink and pale yellow.
The divided casserole dishes were introduced to the range in 1958 and the matte charcoal colour was discontinued in 1960 - it is the rarest of the colours available in this pattern.
ABOUT JAJ PYREX
J. A. Joblings was an English glass company who acquired the licence from US industrial glass makers, Corning Glass Works, in 1922, to make and sell their heat-resistant Pyrex glass cooking and table ware in Britain and across the British Empire.
The new Pyrex cookware coincided with the social changes that occurred in Britain after WW1, when domestic servants were on the wane and middle class women began to tackle household management and cooking for the first time.
Pyrex was one of the first products marketed to the housewife, with an emphasis on its multi-functional uses and practicality - it could be used to cook with, good enough to be transferred directly to the dinner table and easy to wash-up. The housewife's dream!
The white opal ware was introduced in 1954, and now colour could be added - patterns like Chelsea, Matchmaker, Fiesta, Harvest and Autumn Glory were developed by JAJ in the 1960's to appeal to British style and taste.
