Mid century modern 'Kastehelmi' or Dewdrop glass cake plate, designed by Oiva Toikka for Nuutajarvi Notsjo, Finland. Ideal for serving cakes, tortes & desserts and to add a little Scandinavian sophistication to the dinner table and your home!
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
The Kastehelmi (Finnish for 'dewdrop') pattern was designed by Oiva Toikka in 1964 - he came up with the idea of using droplets of glass as decoration when grappling with the problem of covering up the joint marks created by the production process for pressed glass. I love how he created such an elegant solution to a basic problem - the essence of good design!
ABOUT THE MAKER
Nuutajarvi Notsjo glass dates back to the 18th Century but is probably best known for the work produced from the 1950's onward when it was taken over by the Wartsila Group and became the home of such noted designers as Kaj Franck and Oiva Toikka. If these designs look familiar, it's because Nuutajarvi merged with Iittala in 1988 and the work of the Nuutajarvi designers is now produced under the Iittala name.
CONDITION
The cake plate is in excellent vintage condition - no chips, cracks or repairs and very little wear.
